Built in the 14th century, Donnington Castle was the scene of a long siege during the Civil War when it was occupied by Royalist troops. Now owned by English Heritage, entry is free. A great place for picnic with the children.

Much of the area around Newbury is part of the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This group of prehistoric barrows just outside Lambourn is typical of the open countryside of the Berkshire Downs.

Newbury has a very vibrant town centre with a great mix of shops, pubs and restaurants along the pedestrianised main streets. There is a twice weekly market and a strong programme of free special events throughout the year.
